Writing: The Brief Version
Paul Graham’s Writing: The Brief Version has some interesting tips, but he missed out on two of the most important:
- Use whitespace: paragraphs longer than five lines (not just sentences) hurt my eyes, and when I multitask I can’t remember where I was in your article, so I’m more likely to stop reading.
- Lists should be bulleted: don’t build huge lists seperated by semi-colons, use bullets.
Now if Paul Graham had followed these guidelines I might be more inclined to summarise his essay, but I don’t feel like burning my eyes out trying to read it again.
