Martin Schoeller has a number of celebrity close-up photos online. Interesting work. Makes the celebs look more human, apart from the scary reflections in their eyes.
FYI :those scarey reflections are made by a special flash that the professionals use that is a circular tube instead of the normal bulb ones.
sorry but you are wrong about the ring-light. it is not used in these photographs. as a professional photographer i can tell you this. i have shot in this similar style and the lighting used is two strip soft boxes.
